Oh girl, that is really weird! I have lived in the Big Bend area for three years now and have never, ever been hassled by that at any of the checkpoints, and I go through a lot of them as my parents live over 600 miles away (also near the border–I have to go through no less than 6 checkpoints one way!). Your driver’s license should be enough and that should be easily verified by the border patrol as to your citizenship. If I were you, I’d document and report any incidents, particularly this one, involving intimidation of any sort by federal employees. They are supposed to be PROTECTING us!
